The San Diego North County Lions Club hosted the 2016 Miss Carlsbad and Miss Teen Carlsbad Scholarship Pageant on March 26, 2016 at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center in San Diego.
Scholarship contestants are judged in four categories. First, each girl presents a brief self-introduction before a panel of four judges. Then an interview follows so the judges can learn about the contestant’s personality and her ability to engage in conversation. This portion of the contest is completed before the pageant begins.
During the pageant, each contestant introduces herself to the audience and is ranked on personality. Next, each girl appears in a gown as the MC shares information about her with the audience. The contestants are ranked on poise and appearance.
For the final category, each contestant selects a random, impromptu question from a basket. After hearing the MC read the question, contestants share their responses. The girls are judged on their ability to think and respond quickly and coherently.
Public speaking courses and coaching sessions help pageants contestants perform significantly better by appearing confident, poised, and articulate.
Kathleen Petrone, the President and Founder of the Academy for Public Speaking, served on the panel of judges for the Miss Carlsbad pageant contestants.
Kathleen said, “Being able to communicate clearly and effectively is essential for making a positive first impression and scoring well in each of the categories.”
The Academy for Public Speaking offers public speaking courses and public speaking coaching sessions to help children and adults in San Diego improve their confidence and communication skills.
