The Academy for Public Speaking has offered public speaking courses for children in San Diego since 2010. This spring and summer the Academy for Public Speaking will offer new public speaking courses, including a debate club and a competitive speaking summer camp.
The debate club course is for 4th-6th grade students in San Diego. Students will learn debate terminology, types, and techniques. In addition to participating in debates as members of a team, students will also learn how debates are judged and have opportunities to serve on panels of judges.
High school students from the Torrey Pines Speech and Debate Team will visit as special guest speakers to share their knowledge and experience with the Academy for Public Speaking students.
The competitive speaking summer camp course is a two week course, which will include debate and competing in speech contests. Students will learn and apply scriptwriting techniques by planning speeches based on a choice of contest topics. Students will also learn the scoring criteria for several local contests to understand how judges rate speakers.
Students will learn and practice presentation strategies used by professional speakers. A very special guest speaker, who has competed in the Toastmasters World Championship of Public Speaking as a finalist three times, will share his secrets for successful competitive speaking.
The spring debate club course will begin on Thursday, April 14, 2016. Registration is available now, but will be limited to a maximum of 8-10 students. For more information regarding the schedule or to register, please use this link.
