The Academy for Public Speaking students who attended the winter 2016 public speaking courses at After School Learning Tree in San Diego graduated last week.
The students participated in fun, interactive courses designed by Academy for Public Speaking President and Founder Kathleen Petrone to help them become confident, effective communicators.
In addition to improving their level of confidence, the children also learned how to organize their thoughts, write speeches, and deliver them effectively. In the level one course, the students learn basic public speaking skills such as using good volume, speaking at a good rate, and making eye contact.
As students progress through the level one and advanced courses, they learn to use vocal variety, emotion, facial expressions, gestures, and whole body movement. The children also learn leadership skills by filling different roles, such as President, Timer, Secretary, and Ah/Um Eliminator, each week.
During the graduation ceremony, the students showcased their public speaking skills by presenting their final speech projects for their parents. In the level one course, the students presented persuasive charity speeches. Congratulations to Revan Navamshan for winning first place in the persuasive charity speech contest and a donation for the Terry Fox Foundation!
The students in the advanced public speaking course presented entertaining speeches. Congratulations to Jack Bolger for being extremely entertaining and winning first place for his speech about Fit Bits!
