Academy for Public Speaking president and founder Kathleen Petrone was part of the panel of judges who volunteered to judge the California Lions Area 3 Student Speakers Contest held in San Diego on May 24, 2014.
The topic for the 77th annual Lions Club Student Speakers Contest was “What Community Service Means and Why It Matters.” Each contestant presented a speech up to ten minutes in length.
The Area Level Contest is the fifth of six levels in the Lions Club Student Speakers Contest. Each of the students who competed yesterday already won first place and a $4,500 scholarship during the fourth level of the speech competition.
At the fifth level, the speakers competed to win a $6,500 scholarship and the right to advance to the California Lions MD-4 Final Contest. During the sixth and final level of the speech contest, the students will compete to win a $10,000 scholarship. The State Finals will be held on June 7, 2014 at 2 p.m. in Pasadena, California at the Hilton Pasadena.
