The final class of the winter 2012 Teen Speaking Skills graduates celebrated their completion of an eight week course last Wednesday at VisionPulse Creative Center in San Diego. Throughout the course the students gained confidence as they developed their public speaking and leadership skills. The graduates learned valuable techniques for delivering memorable speeches and experimented with applying them during their delivery of four different speech projects. The projects included an introduction speech, a storytelling speech, an inspirational speech, and a persuasive speech.
During the graduation ceremony, the students presented their fourth speech project as they competed in a speech contest to showcase their public speaking skills. Their final speech project was the persuasive charity speech. Teen Speaking Skills founder & Distinguished Toastmaster Kathleen Petrone created this project because she wants her students to realize their voices are a powerful tool they can use to make a positive difference in the world.
“A few years ago I was teaching the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program with my friend and fellow San Diego Toastmaster Jimmy Thai. When Jimmy and I realized none of our students had the courage to volunteer to speak at their graduation ceremony, we decided all of the students should speak. That’s when I came up with the idea to make it a contest where the students would compete to win a donation for the charity of their choice. Having an outward focus not only helps the students feel less nervous, but they also feel great about themselves because they are helping other who are less fortunate.”
Congratulations to Teen Speaking Skills graduates Emma Brown for winning 2nd place and Lindsey Fry for winning 1st place and a $25 donation for her friend’s charity Tehyathon! This wonderful non-profit organization was founded by Tehya, a San Diego teenager, who is determined to make a difference in the lives of people who have Spina Bifida. Tehya’s organization also provides Tenderness Totes for people who are homeless. To read more about this amazing young San Diego teenager, please visit her website – Tehyathon.
